The MV Sundance was originally built as an albacore schooner to work the ocean waters off the coast of
California. The state of
Alaska bought her new and used her as the fish and game patrol boat. She was then purchased and refurbished for tours by long time Alaskans, Wil, Melanie and Meagan Petrich. Aboard the MV Sundance cruise Alaska's wilderness with true Alaskans. Alaska Exploration Adventure Cruises aboard the MV Sundance are perfect for family cruises or small groups of 8-12 guests.
The MV Sundance has a width of 21 feet, draft (or depth) of 11 feet and weight of 150 tons making her a very comfortable and smooth riding vessel for cruising
Alaska. The Sundance is spacious inside and out with 4 private cabins each with a double bed and single berth. Her custom made mattresses are 7 feet long and extremely comfortable. Each stateroom also features an in room sink. The vessel has two shared bathrooms one with a full size shower the other with a cedar shower/sauna. The crew of 4 has their own private rooms with bathroom and showers.
Sundance was completely refitted in 2005 and 2006. Floors are recycled fir with maple walls and contrasting trip. Her salon is spacious and provides a great viewing area with large windows and built in settees. A surround sound stereo system with a flat panel TV is perfect for viewing your photos or movies a the end of the day. The large galley is fitted with modern appliances to prepare fresh seafood, homemade breads and deserts from scratch. The main deck barbeque frequently grills the fresh catch of the day. The wheelhouse has 2 settees that provide a great place for guest to view the scenery and talk with the captain. Sundance also has ample outside deck space.
William Petrich grew up in the maritime industry sailing with his father on both commercial and family owned vessels in
Alaska of all sizes. He has sailed on ships world wide and has spent the last 30 years sailing all waters of
Alaska. Wil has held an unlimited tonnage masters license for 22 years. He is current in all safety courses required by the USCG. Wil has logged at least 1000 trips up and down the "
Inside Passage". Now retired, he and his crew are eager to share their knowledge and beauty of
Alaska with you.
Melanie’s parents homesteaded in
Ketchikan in the early 50’s and she was born and raised in the wilderness of the area. Melanie has been on the water much of her life commercial fishing for halibut, salmon and shrimp. Melanie met her husband while she was working on the
Alaska ferries. She has lived remotely and has an intimate knowledge of the area. She enjoys showing guests how to set and pull the crab and shrimp pots and to how prepare their catch of fish, crab or shrimp and even octopus! She happily takes guests in the speed boat to go exploring ashore or just along the shoreline! Melanie is also an artist and has some of her mosaics onboard Sundance as part of the décor.
