Some of our more unique itineraries explore the underground realm of caves. Consistent with our goal of utilizing adventure activities to access unique natural environments, cave exploration has become one of our most popular activities. Imagine descending into the darkness of a vast underground chamber on foot, or floating on a river. Flip on your headlamp as darkness surrounds you and as your eyes adjust to the light, crystalline limestone formations begin to appear. Learn how limestone formations occur, witness unique animals adapted to life in complete darkness and hear how indigenous cultures used caves in sacred ceremonies. No experience is necessary as these unique explorations do not involve technical caving.

Safety is our primary concern when exploring caves and our guides are extensively trained in the technical discipline of cave rescue and first aid. Before entering the cave guides will conduct a thorough orientation reviewing technique and safety guidelines. Group sizes are kept small with a high guide to client ratio and travelers are not allowed to leave the group, while inside the cave. If it is necessary for an individual to depart the cave a guide will escort the person out while another guide stays with the remaining group.

a typical day

After a delicious breakfast you will be taken to the cave entrance. Guides will review safety procedures and ensure all participants have a light and any other necessary equipment. Some caves require a helmet to protect against bumping your head. Enter the cave and explore from one to four hours. Longer explorations may include a candle-lit lunch underground. Emerge back into the daylight and return to your accommodations by early afternoon.

physical requirements

While cave exploration is not a strenuous activity, it can be challenging for some people. Footing is often uneven, some spaces may not have head high clearance and darkness pervades. Participants should be sure footed and comfortable in complete darkness. For cave explorations that involve river floats, participants must know how to swim.
