Itinerary Notes

We may occasionally alter itineraries slightly for safety, or to take advantage of weather, wildlife and unplanned discoveries. Our ability to be spontaneous makes this style of adventure travel unique.

Arrival & Departure

The Alaska Grand Journeys begins and ends in Anchorage, Alaska. Meet your guide at 6:30am on day 1 at the hotel indicated on the itinerary. The trip ends when your Alaska Railroad train arrives at the Anchorage station on Day 9 or 11 at about 8:30pm. Most travelers plan to arrive at the Anchorage airport (ANC) one day before and depart one day after the trip. If you choose to fly home on the night of Day 9 or 11, we suggest you book a flight that departs after 11:30 p.m., in case of possible transportation delays.

Weather Delay Policy

On rare occasions, rough weather forces us to cancel boat transportation to the Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge. In the remote chance that the boat captains determine that safe and comfortable boat travel to the lodge is not possible, guests will have the option to select one of the following actions: 1) Reschedule your travel dates for the same amount of nights at another time during the season. 2) Refund the stay, or prorate the unused portion of the trip, and make alternative hotel arrangements. 4) If space is available, be transported to another lodge for full-service accommodations, activities, and meals, with a $150 per person, per night refund for this lodge substitution. Please note this option is based on availability.

Trip Reviews

OVERALL: 5 stars ACCOMMODATIONS: 5 stars MEALS: 5 stars

Overall Trip Review

Everything about this trip was outstanding.  The guides, the accommodations, the food and everything!!  Every adventure was very organized and each guide was well versed and obviously loved their jobs.

Accommodations Review

We were happy that we had one of the two cabins at the Back Country Lodge that had its own plumbing.  But it would not have been horrible to have to use the bath house. Again, all of the vessels, vans and vehicles were clean and well taken care of.  Each of the guides on each vehicle was great as well.

Meals Review

All of the food was incredible as evidenced by coming home at least 10 pounds heavier.  The Kenai Back Country and Kenai Fjords were the best. We appreciated that all of the food was provided.  Even snacks--fantastic snacks. One of the best meals was the picnic along the Kenai River.  The guides prepared lunch for us and it was delicious.

Crew & Guides Review

We totally loved our guide, Julie.  WOW!!!  She knows so much, she is so enthusiastic, she made the trip!!  Heidi our rafting guide was great, enthusiastic and loved her job.  Kirsten the bus driver into the Kantishna Lodge in Denali was so enjoyable.  We all were impressed not only by her knowledge, but also by her eagle eye spotting animals.  Johnny at the Back Country Lodge and River Rafting guide was super as well.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

We were prepared!  Your lists were very useful.  Your advise was right on target.  Getting booked into the trip through Adventure Smith was fine and Aaron answered all of our questions and was very helpful.
