Days 7 - 10 - South Georgia

In South Georgia you may visit the bay of Elsehul, with its very active fur seal breeding beach, and then make your way to Right Whale Bay, Salisbury Plain, Godthul, St. Andrews Bay, Gold Harbour, Cooper Bay and Drygalski Fjord to give you a good opportunity to see a wide spectrum of landscapes and wildlife such as the introduced reindeer, fur seals, elephant seals, king and macaroni penguins. At Fortuna Bay you might try to follow in the footsteps of the great British explorer Ernest Shackleton and hike over to Stømness Bay. There and at Grytviken you’ll see abandoned whaling villages, where king penguins now walk in the streets and seals have taken over the buildings. At Grytviken you can visit the Whaling History Museum and Shackleton´s grave. Sail into the Weddell Sea through the ice-clogged Antarctic Sound. Huge tabular icebergs will announce your arrival to the eastern side of the Antarctic Peninsula. At Brown Bluff, set foot on the continent of Antarctica! In good sailing conditions, your time in the Weddell Sea may be extended. Charlotte Bay is often filled with icebergs, seals on floes, kelp gulls, skuas, shags, or penguins. In Wilhelmina Bay you will admire the rugged ice coated mountains of the Arctowski Pensinsula

At Deception Island your ship braves the entrance of the crater through the spectacular Neptune’s Bellow into the ring of Deception Island. Deception itself is a sub-ducted crater, which opens into the sea, creating a natural harbour for the ship. Here you will find hot springs, an abandoned whaling station, thousands of cape pigeons and many Dominican gulls, brown and South Polar skuas and Antarctic terns. Wilson’s storm petrels and black-bellied storm petrels nest in the ruins of the whaling station in Whalers Bay. Overall Trip Review

The first time I stepped onto Antarctica, I just closed my eyes and tried to envision the globe and where I was on it at that very moment; definitely a wow moment and a wow trip! Penguins, penguins, penguins, penguins, penguins! Gosh, I love them! South Georgia was fantastic. Since I prefer masses of wildlife to masses of humanity, I had a wonderful experience.

Accommodations Review

The M/S Plancius is a very nice clean ship with comfortable beds. I was impressed that they cleaned the windows many times during the voyage so that you always had a clear view from inside.

Crew & Guides Review

I thoroughly enjoyed all of our leaders and thought all were professional and enthusiastic. James Cresswell and Brent Houston were outstanding in their knowledge.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

Chris Harter at AdventureSmith was outstanding in answering my endless questions; also in general he was just a pleasure to talk to, easygoing and friendly.

Overall the trip was very well done! The vessel was very well run, our cabin was roomy, and the service was very attentive. There was excellent variety on the menu and we were very impressed with the meals and chefs. The experiences we enjoyed the most were seeing all the animals in their natural habitat and exploring through all the beautiful iceberg scenery.
