Inca Trail Trek
Hike the classic Inca Trail on this trek that has you tent camping in some of the most scenic sites of this historic trail. The Inca Trail Trek may be booked as a 5-day trek only or as a complete 8-day Peru travel package. The trekking portion consists of 5 days of moderate hiking at elevations of up to 13,692 feet and up to 8.7 miles per day. Altitudes on this trip are 10,990 feet in Cu sco, 9,350 feet in the Sacred Valley and 8,104 feet in Machu Picchu.

The full Inca Trail Trek package starts and ends in Cusco Peru. You’ll spend a day visiting Pisac and the archeological site of Ollantaytambo before starting the trek out of Piscaycucho (on kilometer 82 of the railroad). Here you’ll hike through a little-visited section of the Inca Trail, crossing the Urubamba River to then reaching Llaqtapata. Continue on the classic Inca Trail, entering Machu Picchu the way the Incas did, through Inti Punku (the Sun Gate), with a guided tour of the citadel.

Day 1 - Arrive Cusco, Peru

Arrive in Cusco, where you'll be greeted at the airport for your private transfer to your hotel for the night. Enjoy a briefing about the adventure ahead from your guide.

Day 2 - Pisac & Ollantaytambo

Tour by bus with a local guide to Pisac and visit the market and have lunch. Today also includes a visit to the Ollantaytambo ruins. This archeological site located northwest of Cusco sits at 9,160 feet above sea level and is known for its Inca buildings. Overnight in Ollantaytambo in preparation for your trek the next day.

Day 3 - Begin Hiking the Inca Trail to Llaqtapata

Enjoy a private transfer from your Ollantaytambo hotel to Piscacucho (km 82), where the Inca Trail starts. Hike for about 5 hours through a little-visited section of the trail. Stop at Q’oriwayrachina for lunch and then cross the Urubamba River at Q’ente, with an option to visit Wayna Q’ente and Llaqtapata archaeological sites, in whose vicinity your group will camp amidst Inca terracing. (Trekking time: 5-6 hours, Distance: 11km or 6.8 miles)

Day 4 - Llaqtapata to Llulluchapampa

Continue up the Cusichaca Valley passing houses of settlers to finally reach the Andean community of Huayllabamba. From here the trail ascends steeply to a large Pampa below the first pass, your campsite for the night. Here take in a breathtaking view of Mt. Huayanay. Along the trail up this narrow hanging valley you'll begin to see a cloud forest that harbors the Queñua tree (polilepis), a rare forest to be found in the Andes. Camp will be set up at Llulluchapampa. (Trekking time: 6 hours, Distance: 9km or 5.5 miles)

Day 5 - Llulluchapampa to Phuyupatamarca

A steady ascent on an Inca trail up to the Warmiwañusqa pass at 13,692 feet affords a magnificent view of your ascent and the trail ahead. Descend on a restored Inca trail down to the Pacaymayo River to then ascend again to the ruins of Runkuraqay and the second pass at 13,200 feet. From here walk down to the site at Sayacmarca at 12,551 feet on the original Inca Trail, passing a dry lake and the first signs of the cloud forest. A beautiful location overlooking the Aobamba Valley, it affords a respite for a leisurely walk through its imposing structures. Continue along the ridge through amazing landscapes, viewing Mt. Salkantay from the western side and Mt. Pumasillo, a silhouette to the north on the horizon. Walking through a rolling flag-stoned trail arrive at Phuyupatamarca (the village on the edge of the clouds) to set up camp. (Trekking time: 7-8 hours, Distance: 14 km or 8.7 miles)

Day 6 - Phuyupatamarca to Machu Picchu

An early departure today has you trekking along a buttress and passing Phuyupatamarca ruins. The flag-stoned trail winds sharply down into the cloud forest to the ruins of Wiñay Wayna; located below the ridge on the same water course as the previous site, it has well restored Inca ruins. After a two-hour walk through the cloud-forest covered Inca Trail arrive to Machu Picchu the way the Incas used to come, watching the magnificent citadel at your feet from Intipunku, the door of the sun. Take a bus ride to the Village of Machu Picchu for an overnight at a local hotel, and dinner on your own. (Trekking time: 7 hours, Distance: 8 km or 5 miles)

Day 7 - Machu Picchu & Return to Cusco

A half-hour bus ride will bring you to Machu Picchu for a guided visit that on average takes three hours as your official guide walks you through the different sectors of the hill-top citadel, with astonishing views, learning about the aspects of Andean life taking you back in time. In the afternoon, return to the village where the train will take you back to Cusco.

Day 8 - Depart Cusco

After breakfast, enjoy a transfer to the Cusco airport for your flights home or onto other adventures.

In addition to the full 8-day itinerary listed above, you may book this trip as a 5-day trek only, handling your own pre- and post-trek accommodations, as well as accommodations in Aguas Calientes/Machu Picchu. Trek-only departures are available on Sundays or Wednesdays:

Use the itinerary as a guide only. Itineraries may be altered due to weather, wildlife, park regulation or at the captain's discretion. The ability to be flexible makes this type of adventure travel unique. High season dates are highly coveted. We recommend you book at least 9 months in advance if you wish to trek during June - August.

Exclusions

Flights and airport taxes, alcoholic beverages, extras, tips, taxes, laundry service, additional tours, insurance and airline tickets (where applicable), meals not mentioned in itinerary, sleeping bags (can be rented for $20 per person, per trek), hiking boots and other personal gear. Room Configuration

This trip may be booked for single occupancy at a $575 supplement.

Payment & Cancellation

In order to confirm this trip, a deposit of $500 is required at the time of booking. A Reservation Form, which includes a release of liability, must be completed and signed by all travelers. The balance of the trip price is due 90 days before the departure date. Guests who must cancel their trip for any reason must do so in writing. Cancellations are subject to the following per-person fees, based on number of days prior to departure:
Up to 91 days - 50% of deposit
90 to 31 days - 50% of total trip cost
30 to 0 days - 100% of total trip cost
