Day 1 - Embark Serangan (Turtle Island), East Bali

Meet at 9:00 am at the wooden jetty in front of the Dolphinarium in Serangan. Upon boarding you're greeted with a chilled towel and a welcome drink. After settling into your cabin, the Ombak Putih will depart, sailing up along the east coast of Bali. After lunch disembark on the bay of Ambo (Teluk Ambo). Here visit the Water Palace of Amlapura to admire the rice terraces of the rarely visited region of northeast Bali. At night cross the famous "Wallace Line". The Lombok Strait between Bali and Lombok marks an important ecological boundary, first described by Sir Alfred Russel Wallace, the famous 19th century Welsh naturalist. Wallace noticed that islands west of this demarcation are home to Asiatic animal and plant species, whereas the islands located on the east side display a greater similarity to species found in Australia.

Day 2 - East Lombok & Kondo

Docked in Lombok, after breakfast you will board a local coach for a tour into the interior of east Lombok, untouched by the crowds. Visit traditional villages and experience the culture of the Sasak people that are indigenous to the island. Visit a pottery village, attend a local dance performance and enjoy a n authentic Sasak lunch on the way. After re-embarkation move to the small island of Kondo to visit a coral conservation project and have a refreshing swim and snorkel inspecting the local reef.

Day 3 - Satonda

Today set foot on the island of Satonda with its stunning crater lake and beautiful coral gardens along the coastline. Located just a couple of miles off the northwest coast of Sumbawa, Satonda is what remained of an extinct volcano whose caldera was filled with water when nearby Mount Tambora erupted in 1815. This was the biggest volcanic eruption in the collective memory of mankind, much larger than Krakatoa. With an estimated volume of 160 cubic kilometers of rocks and ash ejected from the volcano the following year became known as the "year without a summer" because of the effect on North American and European weather. A highlight of your visit to Satonda is the sight of thousands of flying foxes that commute at dusk from the island to feed on the mainland, returning before first light the next day. Immediately after sunset, set sail for an overnight passage on a course due east.

Day 4 - Sumbawa or Sangean & Banta

Arrival in the morning at Wera on the east coast of the island of Sumbawa. Wera is a Buginese settlement famous for its boatbuilding. Here you will see all kinds of craft in various stages of construction, much the way the Katharina was built in 1998. Stroll through the village and make a chat with the friendly local people. If weather prohibits a safe landing, sail instead to Sangean island, an active volcano towering 5,900 feet above the surrounding waters. Meet the people of the tiny settlement on the island and make a short hike testing the steepness of the volcano. In the afternoon proceed to the island of Banta, the first within the boundaries of the Komodo National Park, uninhabited and perfect for some excellent swimming and snorkeling. Spend a quiet night here.

Day 5 - Komodo National Park

Wake up with the boat at anchor off Komodo Island, one of 80 odd islands of Komodo National Park. Go ashore at the ranger station in Loh Liang for an early morning ranger led trek through the Park searching for the Komodo Lizards. Meet these enormous and intimidating creatures In this rugged landscape. After re-embarking, sail to a beach called ‘red-beach’ because of the particles of red coral mingled with the sand. Here you will swim and snorkel over one of the richest reefs in eastern Indonesia. You will be stunned by the incredible variety of coral and fish on display beneath you.

Itinerary Notes

Use the itinerary as a guide only. Itineraries may be altered due to weather, wildlife, National Park regulation or at the captain's discretion. The ability to be flexible makes this type of small ship cruising unique.

Arrival & Departure

No transfers are provided in Bali. Expect to arrive at the harbor at a meeting point in Sanur before embarkation between 8 and 8:30am. For cruises starting in Flores, transfers to/from the boat to the airport or a hotel are inclusive.

Activities

Opportunities to explore the land and sea are made available most days of your trip and might include trekking, cultural tours, snorkeling, swimming or nature exploration. International flights; transfers in Bali; alcoholic beverages; pre- and post-trip hotel accommodations; gratuities. A satellite phone is available for passengers on board for a fee of US$ 3.00 per minute for international calls and US$ 1.00 per minute for local calls.

Room Configuration

Single share cabins are available. Sex and age are used as criteria in this case. However it is possible to book a single cabin with a surcharge of 75%. The third passenger in a room will be charged 50% of the cruise fare (discount for all cabins calculated from Stateroom rate), though 3 adults are not recommended in triple cabins due to space restraints.

Families & Children

All ages are welcome on board, though cruises aboard Ombak Putih are not recommended for children under 4. The Ombak Putih is quite child friendly; the side railings are adjusted to a higher level than on normal traditional Buginese schooners. We do advise you to keep a close eye on toddlers and small children, especially in the salon area where the stairs to the cabins are a bit steep. Children will be charged 50% of the cruise fare if they share a triple cabin.
