Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica is an ecological lodge in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest, adjacent to the Tambopata National Park. Since 1975, the lodge has been instrumental in the scientific study of the rainforest. The rooms are simple and fit into the natural surroundings. The wildlife is remarkable, from giant and colorful macaws, to toucans, parrots, tapirs, tamarin monkeys, owls, the gorgeous Southern Amazon red squirrels, as well as a large variety of monkeys.
Reserva Amazonica was named one of National Geographic Traveler's 25 Best Ecolodges in 2013. Choose between sleeping in one of the 35 wood-and-thatch cabanas built in the Amazon's traditional style or a secluded canopy tree house. Each room is attractively furnished with log chairs, comfortable beds shrouded by mosquito netting and a small porch with two hammocks. The cabanas have no electricity, and no hot water, adding to the charm and authenticity. After dinner, guests return to their cabanas across tree-trunk-boardwalks to find lit candles and kerosene lamps lighting the entry and bathroom. Three of the cabanas rate as "suites" and have a more luxurious bedroom with two double beds. Also following indigenous architectural traditions a walk-in closet large windows and a spacious terrace with two hammocks.
Services and activities include: A massage room, nature programs for adults and children, evening walks and astronomy. The Anaconda trail at Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica allows visitors to cross the flooded Aguajales swamp on a wooden boardwalk to scout out tropical amphibians (Inkaterra has helped identify five new species to date). Traverse the canopy on a hanging walkway for treetop access to colorful birds and some of the more than 1,266 species of flora found around Reserva Amazonica.
