Island Spirit Cruise

From: $4500
9 days • Level 1 (Details)Island Spirit Cruise
If your idea of a great vacation includes spending quiet evenings anchored in peaceful coves, getting up-close and personal with the native wildlife, and sightseeing and shopping throughout Southeast Alaska's most popular destinations, then the Alaska Island Spirit Cruise is the perfect Alaska cruise for you. Imagine enjoying humpback whales and marine mammals close enough to hear the "r ush" of their breathing. Cruising the rugged shorelines and remote bays of Alaska's panhandle, bald eagles, cormorants, tufted puffins, loons, and Pacific sea birds fly right outside your cabin window. Feeling the need to get even closer to nature? You can enjoy one of the ship's kayaks to explore the nooks and crannies of the anchorage, or help pull in a crab trap to check for the catch of the day.

The Alaska Island Spirit Cruise is true to its name capturing the Alaskan spirit that permeates the islands, wilderness and settlements of Southeast Alaska's Inside Passage. Cruise Alaska aboard the 32-passenger Motor Vessel Island Spirit exploring the Russian and Tlingit heritage of Sitka and the Gold Rush history of Alaska's capital of Juneau and towns of Skagway and Haines. In addition this cruise visits the smaller, more authentic settlements such as Tenakee Springs and Hoonah, and ventures into the state's treasured Glacier Bay National Park. Watch for whales, bears, eagles and glaciers while exploring up close and away from the ship on beach walks, zodiac excursions and kayaking. While cruising Alaska aboard the Island Spirit expect delicious cuisine, excellent service and the hospitality of a small ship captain who also owns and operates the ship.

Trip Reviews

OVERALL: 5 stars ACCOMMODATIONS: 5 stars MEALS: 2 stars

Overall Trip Review

The boat and numbers were perfect for us. The ports of call gave us a lot of variety that was appreciated and made so enjoyable by the naturalist, Ken.

Accommodations Review

We were lucky with our room downstairs. We had to be moved from the upstairs by a passenger who had problems of mobility. OK, but my brother and wife had a very small room and considering that we had booked a long time ago, it was not understandable that they had this tiny room in the middle of the boat, even some of the families' childrens rooms were much larger.

Meals Review

The only thing that did not work was the level of cooking and selection of food. Some was good enough, and the biscuits were really delicious. Breakfast lacked variety, and it was an important meal for all of the outings and activities - too much hash brown, we were always asking for eggs. The dining room staff were fantastic. Lunch was poor - soups ordinary and salads lacked variety - often full of leftovers. Dinner was better as the happy hour gave us tasty starters and was a special and wonderful daily happening. We had so little fish which was silly on the waters of the Inner Passage. (Until a bit of lateral thinking on my part gave us a beautiful salmon for once.) Desserts were average but not too bad. I was warned the standard would be not too good, and I think your chef let you down as it could have been better on all counts.

Crew & Guides Review

The captain and his team could not have been better. This was enhanced by the large Texas family group that made it so easy to get on together. The crew were wonderful and always helpful and attentive. We really appreciated Ken the naturalist on board; he had an enormous fund of knowledge and his whole approach to our travel and experiences could not have been more impressive. The sub chef made great goodies.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

The information was always ready and available. Andrew Browning was great and so helplful and kept up the amazing string of emails over the months, which made us enthusiastic and ready for all.

I am so enthusiastic with the results of the trip and organisation, especially the size of the ship and group, that I am telling everyone to contact you and sending them photos to prove it.

Overall Trip Review

The Island Spirit was everything we hoped for - wonderful staff and crew, great wildlife experiences, wonderful fellow travelers. Island Spirit night in Ford's Terror was absolutely the highlight. No way that words can describe the experience of being immersed in all the glories of the Inside Passage.

We met people from around the globe who shared our love of wildlife, the environment and photography - with 24 hours they were "family."

Accommodations Review

This is not luxury travel, and we expected just "the basics." Thus, we were delightfully surprised at the quality of the food and ship lounge on the Island Spirit.

Meals Review

Excellent on Island Spirit!

Crew & Guides Review

We found staff, crew and naturalists all to be excellent, personable, and skilled at their jobs.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

Extremely thorough - every detail covered in the materials sent to us - couldn't have been easier to be independent travelers. While we handled all airfare, AdventureSmith took care of all land transportation and transfers - first rate.
