Small Ship
This remarkable voyage takes you deep into the Darién Jungle — via dugout canoe — where you’ll be treated to Choco tribal arts and dancing. Also visit Cocos Island, said to have been the inspiration for both Jurassic Park and Treasure Island.
This cruise is one segment of the year long Voyage of the Great Explorers world cruise and is part of Chapter 4: Christopher Columbus — The New World. These five memorable world cruise voyages bring the New World into a new perspective. You’ll cruise the Atlantic coastline, relive American history, island hop in the Caribbean as Columbus did in the 15th century, then you’ll transit the Panama Canal. Your small ship makes it easy to get up-close and personal as you explore the tropical rainforests of Panama, Costa Rica and Ecuador.

Day 1 - Panama City, Panama
Arrive in Panama City, Panama and check into your included hotel.
Day 2 - Panama City, Panama
Panama City is an advanced center of communications, banking, commerce and tourism, partly due to UNESCO’s inscription of its Archaeological and Historic Districts as World Heritage Sites in 1997, and partly due to the wealth it has accrued since Panama took control of the Canal at the end of 1999. Morning at leisure. Prior to embarkation, enjoy a highlight tour of Panama City en route to the ship.
Day 3 - Darién Jungle, Panama
In their efforts to save the Darien Jungle from being poached by loggers and developers, UNESCO declared the Darien National Park one its World Heritage Sites in 1981. The hardy few who come to this bridge between the North and South American continents can enjoy unspoiled natural sandy beaches, jagged rocky coasts, mangrove swamps, and tropical forests full of unique plants, birds and wildlife. Visit a remote Emberá village on the coast of the Darién Jungle. The Emberá people open their homes to welcome Cruise West friends.
Day 4 - Isla Coiba
UNESCO has inscripted Coiba National Park off the southwest coast of Panama, protecting Coiba Island, 38 smaller islands and the surrounding marine areas of the Gulf of Chiriqui. The Pacific tropical forest contains numerous endemic plants, animals and birds plus ongoing development of new species; it is also a refuge for threatened species like the crested eagle. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Coiba National Park consists of 38 islands offering outstanding bird-watching.
Day 5 - Golfo Dulce, Costa Rica
Along the Pacific Coast of south Costa Rica is eco-friendly Golfo Dulce (Sweet Gulf), a large sheltered bay ringed by secluded beaches and a surrounding tropical rainforest of such bio-diversity that it has been declared a National Park. Four monkey species (spider, whiteface, squirrel and howler) share this revered place with anteaters, jaguars, ocelots and millions of birds. Take a guided tour of the beautiful gardens at Casa Orquideas or “Orchid House.” See, smell and touch a wide variety of exotic plants. (Zodiac landing or touring)
Day 6 - At Sea
Day 7 - Cocos Island, Costa Rica
Almost 350 miles south of Costa Rica, Cocos National Park is the only island in the eastern Pacific with a tropical rainforest. Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Cocos has become a haven for eco-friendly tourists and divers who rate it as one of the world’s best places to view large marine life such as sharks, rays, tuna and dolphins in their natural habitat. Snorkel in Cocos Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its turquoise bays are thick with sea turtles, rays and hammerhead sharks. (Zodiac landing or touring)
Day 8 - Cocos Island, Costa Rica
The bird life here is prolific with some 90 species! (Zodiac landing or touring)
Day 9 - At Sea
We set sail for Ecuador.
Day 10 - Manta, Ecuador
The scenic city of Manta lies on Ecuador’s Pacific Coast and serves as a center for tourism, a port for cargo shipping and cruise liners, and a major source of local income for its successful tuna fishing industry. Having thrived since pre-Columbian days, the now modern port city hosts a major annual film festival; its beautiful beaches are popular with water sports enthusiasts. This morning enjoy a tour of Manta and the village of Montecristi, known for the high quality “Panama Hats” they produce.
Day 11 - Guayaquil, Ecuador
Disembark or continue your journey with the next voyage.
