Small Ship
Sail the most legendary route in Arctic lore, the Northwest Passage from Anadyr, Russia to Resolute, Canada. This will be the final west to east transit of the Northwest Passage made by our icebreaker Kapitan Khlebnikov. The ship retires as an expedition vessel in March 2012. The End of an Era has begun.
Special Guest Andrew Lambert, Laughton Professor of Naval History and bestselling author has reinterpreted the reputation and legacy of Sir John Franklin. Andrew was inspired to write The Gates of Hell: Sir John Franklin's Tragic Quest for the Northwest Passage while sailing in the Canadian Arctic aboard Kapitan Khlebnikov. Andrew returns to the Arctic and the icebreaker to present two talks about his interpretation of Franklin."
Day 1 - Anchorage, Alaska
Special Guest Andrew Lambert and the adventurers who will accompany him arrive in Anchorage to spend the night.
Accommodations: Kapitan Khlebnikov
Included Meals: breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Day 4-6 - Russia's Chukotka Peninsula
The transit begins at the eastern edge of the Asian continent. There, you'll explore remote villages and Ittygran - aka - Whalebone Alley. Gigantic bones, weathered by wind and snow, stand erect along the shore, a timeless reminder of 2,000 years of whaling by the indigenous peoples of the region.
Accommodations: Kapitan Khlebnikov
Included Meals: breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Day 10-11 - Canadian Arctic
At the heart of the Northwest Passage lie the islands of the Canadian Arctic archipelago. Early explorers encountered an uncharted maze of impassable ice-choked straits between the islands. Still, a century after Amundsen's first successful transit, only a handful of passenger vessels have negotiated the entire route. Our icebreaker, Kapitan Khlebnikov has completed 16 full transits, more than any other vessel in this or any other century.
Accommodations: Kapitan Khlebnikov
Included Meals: breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Day 15-17 - Victoria Strait to Lancaster Sound
As you sail through the waterways associated with Sir John Franklin, special guest Andrew Lambert will introduce a film about the British naval officer, as well as deliver the second of his presentations.
Accommodations: Kapitan Khlebnikov
Included Meals: none
Day 18 - Resolute, Nunavut, Canada
After two weeks above the Arctic Circle in continual daylight, you will fly to Ottawa to spend the final night of this expedition at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier Hotel. There you will readjust to a world where night and day are distinct.

Vessels accommodate between 46 - 110 passengers and have ice-strengthened hulls designed specifically for polar travel.
Accommodations and Services Aboard:
Vessels accommodate passengers in comfortable cabins. Public areas include a Lounge and bar with facilities for slide shows and lectures; Views are excellent from the large, open decks and the navigation bridge, where passengers are always welcome. The chefs produce a varied menu and the comfortable bar is stocked with a good selection of wine. Inform us of any special dietary requirements; however, note that the galleys unfortunately can not prepare kosher meals. The ship officers and crew are all highly experienced in ice navigation. The atmosphere aboard is relaxed and informal, more like a private expedition than a cruise.
Qualifications: This trip will be enjoyed by anyone who is in good health, has full mobility, and leads an active life. The expedition is ship-based and physically not very demanding. Although we spend as much time as possible ashore, you are welcome to remain aboard the ship if you like. To join any off-vessel excursions, passengers must be able to navigate the steep, 30-stair, gang-way, un-assisted both down and up. Daily excursions from the boat will be made in Zodiacs. Trip members will take excursions to specific areas for wildlife observation. Hiking time for most landings will be a couple of hours roundtrip with lots of time to stop to study, photograph and enjoy the flora and fauna. Some landings are dry but many are "wet", requiring cautious footing on slippery rocks. The boat staff will be on hand to assist. You are traveling in remote areas without access to sophisticated medical facilities, so you must not join this expedition if you have a life-threatening condition, or need daily medical treatment.
