Lying just offshore of Belize's Caribbean
Coast lies a chain of palm fringed sand and coral islands called Cayes
(pronounced keys). These idyllic tropical islands are the brow of the
second largest barrier reef in the world. Long recognized as one of the
world's best snorkeling sites this reef and island system is the ideal
place to explore by sea kayak. Glide along the tranquil waters of the
Caribbean as you discover remote cayes, beaches, mangroves and reef
systems. Snorkel among colorful fish, eagle rays, and harmless nurse
sharks while your naturalist guide points out unusual corals, sponges
and sea fans. Pitch your tent under shady palms on deserted islands,
feast on locally caught fish and relax among the authentic tropical
rhythms of Belizean seaside life. Kayak explorations of this unique
region provide unparalleled access to pristine environments and
solitude seldom experienced by conventional tours. No experience is
necessary to enjoy the natural history and relaxation of our Belize Sea
Kayak Odyssey.
Day 1 - Arrive Placencia
The adventure begins in the rural Caribbean
village of Placencia. The quiet beach-side village is located on a
long, slender peninsula penetrating the azure waters of the Caribbean
in southern Belize. Upon arrival in Placencia you are greeted at the
airstrip and transferred to a simple, yet comfortable beach-front hotel
in the heart of town. Enjoy walking the quiet lanes as Creole children
play soccer in the sand and local women in colorful hats lean over
fences to chat with neighbors. Ease into the local rhythm and let the
relaxed demeanor of Belizean lifestyle permeate your senses. This
evening enjoy a welcome dinner featuring fresh local seafood and a trip
orientation where guides will prepare you for the tropical adventure to
come.
Accommodations: Westwind Hotel or similar
Included Meals: dinner
Day 2 - Silk Caye Snorkel and Kayak
Transfer by boat approximately 45 minutes to
the barrier reef and Silk Caye. The remote feeling of being castaway on
a deserted island overtakes you on what are likely the most beautiful
islands in Belize. Base camp on Silk Caye consists of tents set among
the shady palms with spectacular Caribbean views. Portable shower and
toilet facilities are provided. Food is freshly caught including
lobster, conch and fish depending on season, rice, pasta, a variety of
fresh vegetables and tropical fruits prepared in traditional fisherman
style dishes.
Upon arrival you will immediately want to
explore this beautiful landscape. Step out of your tent onto a
beautiful white sand beach and into the warm tranquil waters of the
Caribbean. The reef surrounding Silk Caye is teeming with life
including hundreds of species of fish, sponge, coral, and other unusual
invertebrates. As you snorkel your naturalist guide will point out
colorful parrotfish, snappers, angelfish and countless other reef
fishes found in this area.
This afternoon it's time to kayak! In the
calm waters surrounding the island your guide will introduce the fun
and easy sport of sea kayaking, review safety procedures and answer any
questions. Multiple guides ensure that veteran paddlers and those with
no experience can enjoy the trip at your own pace. In addition a
support boat is along for the entire trip, so you may paddle as much or
little as you like. After the kayak orientation test your skills as you
glide across the water exploring nearby islands.
Note: Two
person Wilderness Systems sea kayaks are used ensuring a safe and
stable ride for beginners and veterans alike. A limited number of
single sea kayaks are available upon request for experienced paddlers.
Accommodations: Camping on Silk Caye
Included Meals: lunch and dinner
Days 3-4 - Caye and Reef Exploration
Wake to the sound of the Caribbean gently
lapping at the shore. Explore numerous islands in close proximity to
Silk Caye including Little Water Caye, Pumkin Caye, Hatchet Caye and
Pelican Caye, each offering its own unique personality and ecosystem.
Little Water and Pelican Cayes support mangroves perfect for sea kayak
exploration and home to abundant birds including brown pelicans, green
herons and melodious blackbird. Mangroves are also a nursery for many
marine species and snorkeling among the roots provides unique exposure
to this exceptional ecosystem. Many of these waters offer excellent
fishing bonefish opportunities and are good places to see eagle rays,
sea turtles and dolphins. Strong paddlers can visit Laughing Bird Caye
National Park. Dozens of secluded beaches and accessible reefs are
within easy reach of our base camp on Silk Caye. Each day the route
will vary depending on the interests of the group and local wind,
weather and wildlife conditions. Afternoons and evenings are free to
relax on the beach or in a hammock, explore the island, enjoy
spectacular sunsets and stargazing.
Accommodations: Camping on Silk Caye
Included Meals: breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Day 5 - Barrier Reef
Enjoy an exciting paddle along the barrier
reef itself. This barrier reef is the second largest in the world and
protects the coral cayes and coastline of Belize from the open ocean.
Outside of the reef the tranquil shallow waters give way to the dark
blue depths of the Caribbean. Here you may paddle outside the reef for
a brief experience of open water paddling. Return to Silk Caye for
lunch and perhaps one last snorkel then pack up the gear and boat back
to Placencia.
Accommodations: Westwind Hotel or similar
Included Meals: breakfast and lunch
Day 6 - Departure or Trip Extension
Return to Belize City for your international flight connection or begin your
trip extension.
