Wilderness Lodge
On our most active adventure in Costa Rica you will mountain bike the flanks of Arenal Volcano, sea kayak or canoe through the rain forest of Tortuguero National Park and river raft the beautiful Pacuare river canyon. Two moderately strenuous yet fully supported scenic bicycle rides explore the active Arenal Volcano, nearby Lake Arenal, surrounding rain forest and rural villages. Discover the primary forests of Tortuguero National Park via a series of calm creeks and canals on kayaks, canoes or hydro bikes. These unique, human powered craft provide unparalleled access to the region’s plentiful wildlife and environments unreachable by boats. Conclude with an exciting whitewater rafting trip through the Pacuare River Canyon, where 100-foot waterfalls cascade into one of the most beautiful rivers in the tropics. Accommodations for this sports adventure include wilderness lodges and hotels.
Day 1 - Arrive San Jose, Costa Rica
Upon arrival at Costa Rica at Juan Santamaria International Airport you are greeted and transferred to your hotel in San Jose.
Accommodations: Hotel Bougainvillea or similar
Included Meals: dinner
Day 2 - San Carlos Valley Biking
A beautiful drive through rain forest, farms and ranches leads to the quaint village of Muelle San Carlos. The San Carlos Valley and Arenal Volcano is a bicyclist’s dream with miles of scenic, un-crowded roads and trails through flat and easy rolling countryside. Tilajari Resort co-owner Ricardo Araya, an avid biker, has pioneered unique and beautiful rides for us. This afternoon's 20-mile loop ride combines paved and dirt roads through cattle ranches and sugarcane farms. Explore a patch of tropical rain forest where sloth, toucans, and monkeys abound before crossing over a hanging bridge on the San Carlos River. The fully guided ride is vehicle supported in case of tired legs or to repair flat tires. After the ride return to Tilajari REsort Lodge for a well-deserved dip in the pool.
Accommodations: Tilajari Lodge
Included Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 3 - Arenal Volcano and Lake Ride
Today's 33.5 mile ride begins at the base of Arenal Volcano and leads back down to Tilajari, dropping over 1,400 feet in elevation. Although you will need to climb (or ride in the van) a few steep hills, this ride is characterized by its exhilarating downhills. Enjoy spectacular views of beautiful Lake Arenal and the towering Arenal Volcano. After riding 17.5 miles stop at Dona Mireya's for lunch and a soak in natural hot springs with volcano views. Your host, Dona Mireya will prepare a typical Costa Rican meal from her small, rustic kitchen. Then, ride 16 miles of mostly gentle downhill and a few short easy climbs back to the Tilajari Lodge.
Accommodations: Tilajari Lodge
Included Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 4 - River Transfer to Tortuguero
Embark on an exciting voyage in a covered boat down the Sarapiqui and San Juan River system to the Caribbean coast and Tortuguero. The rich human history of the San Juan River includes the famed pirate, Henry Morgan, Lieutenant Oliver Nelson and thousands of forty-niners on their way to and from the gold fields of California. Follow in these historical footsteps as you scan the river and surrounding rain forest for the abundant wildlife found in the area. The river trip to Tortuguero takes three to five hours depending on wildlife and water conditions. Arrive at the Tortuga Lodge in time to rest in a hammock or swim in the pool.
Accommodations: Tortuga Lodge
Included Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 5 - Tortuguero Kayaking
Your guide will lead optional early morning bird walks searching for many of the 300 species found here. Originally intended to protect a major nesting beach of the Atlantic Green sea turtle, Tortuguero National Park now protects 51,870 acres, one of the last large areas of tropical rain forest in Central America. Deep within the reserve at Cano Palma trade your motorboat for a kaya. Actively explore the pristine heart of this flooded forest. These agile, human-powered crafts provide a fun and exciting way to explore, beyond the reach of motorboats where wildlife is most abundant. Return to the Tortuga Lodge mid-afternoon.
Accommodations: Tortuga Lodge
Included Meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 6 - Pacuare RIver Rafting
Depart early from Tortuga Lodge for a final boat transfer to Cano Blanco then drive to the Orosi Valley and the Pacuare River. After a safety talk and paddling instruction, experience white water rafting on what is arguably the most beautiful river canyon in Costa Rica. Over 20 Class III and IV rapids are surrounded by primary rain forest miraculously clinging to 100-foot high vertical canyon walls. Waterfalls plunging from the Pacuare canyon rim into the river will impress the adventuresome beginner and the experienced rafter alike. Half way down the river your guides prepare and serve lunch on the riverbank. Finally after more great rapids and scenery you arrive at the take-out mid-afternoon and return to San Jose by vehicle. Enjoy a farewell dinner with your guides and travel companions to toast your Costa Rica vacation adventure.
