The Mediterranean, or "Middle Earth," encompasses the region of land surrounding the Mediterranean Sea, which includes portions of Europe, Asia and Africa. The Sea is the uniting factor for these three quarters of the globe making it rich in world history. As a superhighway of transport, trade and cultural exchange, it provides mass appeal to those searching for an enriching, historical adventure. With pleasant climate, beautiful coastline, ancient architecture, breathtaking scenery and diverse culture, the Mediterranean is the most popular destination in the world, and perfect for small ship cruising.

The flora of the Mediterranean Basin is dramatic. Its 22,500 endemic vascular plant species are more than four times the number found in all the rest of Europe.

The flora of the Mediterranean Basin is dramatic. Its 22,500 endemic vascular plant species are more than four times the number found in all the rest of Europe; the hotspot also supports many endemic reptile species. As Europe’s vacation destination, populations of threatened species are increasingly fragmented and isolated to make way for resort development and infrastructure. The Mediterranean monk-seal, the barbary macaque and the Iberian lynx, which is Critically Endangered, are among the region’s imperiled species.

The Mediterranean consists of a subtropic climate providing relatively mild winters and very warm summers, making it a perfect destination for small ship cruises. The best time of year for small ship cruises in the Mediterranean is April through November.

Mediterranean climates rarely, if ever, see frost or sno;, therefore plants such as palm, citrus and many broad-leaf evergreens flourish in contrast to the hardier deciduous and coniferous trees which dominate mid-latitude climates. It's no wonder the cradle of civilization is found in the dry summer subtropical climate. The temperature is moderated by nearby large bodies of water making for comfortable conditions throughout most of the year. Temperatures around the Mediterranean coast are higher than the dry summer subtropical climates bordered by colder ocean water.

Mediterranean climate zones are associated with the five large subtropical high-pressure cells of the oceans: the Azores High, South Atlantic High, North Pacific High, South Pacific High and the Indian Ocean High, which cause the dry summers. These high-pressure cells shift toward the poles in the summer and toward the equator in the winter, playing a major role in the formation of the world's tropical deserts and the Mediterranean Basin's climate. There is a main controlling factor driving the characteristics of the dry summer subtropical climate, which is the alternating influence of the subtropical high in summer and Westerlies during the winter. In the summer, the subtropical high has expanded to its largest extent and most poleward position, exerting its influence on subtropical west coasts, whereas in the winter, the subtropical high shifts to the south and its influence is replaced by the Westerlies associated with the subpolar low, bringing much-needed precipitation during the winter.

Greece Climate

Has largely a Mediterranean climate, with a remarkable range of micro-climates to do the country's unique geography. Experiencing plenty of sunshine, mild temperatures and a limited amount of rainfall, even the winter months are ideal for visiting. The summer months tend to be hot and peak tourists season, however the seasonal winds called 'meltemi' blow through and pleasantly cool the atmosphere. Autumn in general is beautiful. December to March are the coldest months, though there are many crystal-clear fine days, and the glorious lowland flowers begin to bloom. The high altitudes endure cold and wet conditions with the mountains themselves under snow from November to May.

Turkey Climate

Among the coastal areas, Istanbul's shores have a relatively damp, Balkan climate, with muggy summers and cool, rainy, seldom snowy winters. The Mediterranean coast which can be uncomfortably hot during July and August, provides a wonderful atmosphere in the spring or autumn when the weather is gentler and the crowds thinner. Late October and early November feature the "Indian summer," which is ideal time for visiting.
