Day 1 - Embark Juneau, Alaska

Upon boarding, the Captain and crew welcome you aboard with smiles and a cocktail. Embark to cruise the scenic channels of the Inside Passage.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
Wilderness Explorer, Wilderness Adventurer or Wilderness Discoverer
MEALS:
dinner

Days 2 - 4 - Glacier Bay National Park

One of America’s crown jewel national parks is yours to explore and marvel at for the next three days. At Glacier Bay National Park, a UNESCO Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve, you’ll pick up the National Park Ranger who will be with you to explore coves and corners of the bay that most visitors miss. In the bay there are sea lions, mountain goats, sea otters, bears, moose, eagles, and spectacular scenic backdrops. The park itself is 3.2 million acres (a little larger than the state of Connecticut), so there is plenty to see.

Paddle a kayak and be awed at the face of a massive glacier. Go on a boot-sucking trek through sandbars and rainforest. And ride a skiff along shore for an up-close exploration of Glacier Bay. Linger near South Marble Island to spot the many species of rare seabirds that call this area home. Keep your eyes on the water and the island for brightly-colored puffins and black oystercatchers. Stop in Bartlett Cove for a visit to the Park Service's headquarters.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
Wilderness Explorer, Wilderness Adventurer or Wilderness Discoverer
MEALS:
breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 5 - Icy Strait Whale Watching

Set your course for arguably the richest whale waters in Southeast Alaska. Join the Captain on the bridge or the Expedition Leader out on deck in search of marine mammals, primarily in the Icy Strait/Pt. Adolphus area. Then, set off for a more intimate land and sea exploration via skiffs for a closer inspection of the remote coastline, with eyes set on the shoreline for possible bear sightings.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
Wilderness Explorer, Wilderness Adventurer or Wilderness Discoverer
MEALS:
breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 6 - Chichagof Island & Baranof Island

Today meander along the “waterfall coast” of Chichagof Island. With no binding agenda, marvel at the grand scenery of Alaska as our crew expertly guides you through those “not in the guide book” areas and fjords. This evening might conclude at anchor in a remote shelter, possibly Red Bluff Bay, providing another grand opportunity to lower the kayaks and skiffs, keeping your eyes open for sea otters and bears nearby. Explore the forest and shoreline on an intertidal walk. Enjoy another delectable dinner onboard and relax in the hot tub before calling it a day.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
Wilderness Explorer, Wilderness Adventurer or Wilderness Discoverer
MEALS:
breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 7 - Peril Strait & Sergius Narrows

Peril Strait runs a total of 50 miles from Chatham Strait to Salisbury Sound. This haven for small ships is scenically highlighted by a very narrow connecting passageway called Sergius Narrows and an opening at Hoonah Sound as it reaches north and then west toward Sitka. Spend the bulk of the day exploring the shoreline for bear and the waters for otters, whales and more. This wildlife-rich waterway separating Chichagof and Baranof Islands is a great place to watch for eagles perched on trees along the shore. The passage narrows to only 300 feet in one spot (24 feet deep). After an adventurous, but “un-perilous” day, toast your voyage with a festive Farewell Dinner and “photo journal” of your trip presented by your Expedition Leaders.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
Wilderness Explorer, Wilderness Adventurer or Wilderness Discoverer
MEALS:
breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 8 - Disembark Sitka

Gather for breakfast this morning as you cruise the final leg of your journey to Russian-influenced Sitka, Alaska, for disembarkation. A transfer will be provided to your hotel or to the Sitka airport for your flight home.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
n/a
MEALS:
breakfast

Itinerary Notes

We may occasionally alter itineraries slightly for safety, or to take advantage of weather, wildlife, and unplanned discoveries. Our ability to be spontaneous makes our style of cruising unique.

Arrival & Departure

This cruise begins and ends in Juneau or Sitka, Alaska depending on departure date. Plan to arrive at the airport by 2:30pm on Day 1. On Day 8, the final day of the cruise, please do not schedule return flights until after 11:30am.

Activities

Onboard amenities include two hot tubs (one on the bow and one on the aft sun deck), sauna, and exercise equipment. Trip Reviews

OVERALL: 4 stars ACCOMMODATIONS: 4 stars MEALS: 4 stars

Overall Trip Review

The overall trip was a memorable experience.  AdventureSmith did a good job of preparing us so that we could have maximum enjoyment of the trip and its activities.  The ship was well kept, the crew was excited to be there and service on all levels was very good. Glacier Bay National Park was the highlight of the trip.  Seeing the glaciers, kayaking in the ice fields and seeing the wildlife in that area - all were outstanding!

Accommodation Review

Rooms were clean, vessel had plenty of activity gear for guests, ship was well maintained.  Kayak rudders were always problematic but I guess that comes with the salt water environment.

Meals Review

They offered plenty of variety each day.  I appreciated the choice of fresh salads, hot soups and varied entrees.  The desserts were especially good!  I was disappointed in the lack of fresh fish.  We had fish but it was definitely not fresh.  An Alaskan cruise should include more of the local offerings, not fish bought in bulk from a Costco type store.

Crew & Guides Review

Kent and JP were our favorite guides because of their extensive knowledge of the subjects and their passion for the area.  They were tireless - led many trips each day with the same enthusiasm each time!  Other guides put the same energy into their activities but their knowledge was not as complete.

The evening presentations were a good addition but they need to be more interactive or fun.  They were too intellectual to keep attention after a long day. As I mentioned above, the National Park ranger was awful.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

The information provided was very complete and detailed.  I was curious if the sales people have ever been on one of these trips.  If not, it would be a good idea.  We did receive conflicting information on a couple of occasions but it wasn't a problem.

Traveler Advice

Bring plenty of clothing layers.

We had a wonderful trip and loved all the activities. We especially loved the kayaking.

Accommodations Review

The accommodations were very good.  Just what we needed.  I did not bring a conditioner for my hair.  Shampoo was provided, but not the conditioner.  It would have been nice to have both:)

Meals Review

Outstanding! The pastry chef was amazing!

Crew & Guides Review

Overall Trip Review

Everything was amazing. The food, guides, security, landscapes, weather, places to visit. Congratulations.

Accommodations Review

The vessel was good. The room was good, enough space to store clothes. The only thing is that sometimes the room was a bit smelly, we never discovered why, but we told many of the crew members and they tried to fix it.

Meals Review

Amazing food. They took care of everything. Vegetarian options were amazing.

Crew & Guides Review

Sean and Brant were our main guides. Very good!! ... the knew a lot about the places to visit, the logistics... and solved all of our questions.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

Very good logistics. Everything was so good, that you just have to enjoy. They will take care of everything!

Overall Trip Review

I enjoyed the humpback whales bubble-net feeding and orca whales mating the most. Spending 3 days in Glacier Bay was a great perk. Enjoyed a loose sailing itinerary so that wildlife viewing was for long periods of time. My husband and I are adventure enthusiasts.  Highly recommend this trip for anyone that has the love for the outdoors.

Accommodations Review

Comfy bed, spacious room, and relaxing lounge area upstairs by the bar.

Meals Review

I'm a vegan and Chef Jeff was truly astounding at accommodating my vegan lifestyle.

Guides & Crew Review

Jeremy had a wealth of knowledge of Southeast Alaska and shared a true passion for the outdoors. Sarah was outgoing and had a great personality, which made spending excursions with her enjoyable. Flora had a great spirit about her and led great kayaking tours.

Traveler Advice

Pack a hat and gloves even in the summer time, it was COLD!

Overall Trip Review

This  trip was incredible....definitely the trip of a lifetime for us.  It measured up to and far beyond any of our expectations. We really enjoyed our extra few days in Sitka.  We were lucky to arrive on a beautiful sunny 70 degree day.  We walked the town and down to Totem Park. It was a really nice town, and didn't feel too touristy. We ate both nights on the deck at the Dock Shack Restaurant, part of Shee Atika hotel we stayed at. At both ends of the cruise, everything about the baggage handling and transfers went so smoothly. So organized, friendly, and efficient.

We were fortunate to see an amazing, not often seen, display of wildlife... bubble netting humpback whales!!  It was a calm, partly sunny day which made the sightings even better. We had just started our whale watching afternoon, heading up Chatham strait toward Icy Straits when we ran into them. We must have watched them for over an hour, with at least 12 different bubble netting repetitions... At one point the group of whales swam right under the bow of the idling boat. We reluctantly continued cruising and before long encountered several up close and personal pods of orca.  More stunned and awed expedition leaders when what should we observe but mating orcas! So needless to say this was an incredible afternoon for all on board...one not soon to be forgotten.  My husband and I enjoyed all the off board activities offered daily.  Certainly kayaking amidst the floating ice chunks in front of a glacier, and hiking up beside glaciers, observing the incredible magnitude of the ice wall fronts, and the sounds of cracking and calving ice were more highlights of our trip.

We felt like our weather all in all was reasonable to good for the area and it didn't seem like it ever stopped us from doing anything.  We had some bonus sunshine too! I could go on and on......but yes, we loved it! From the wildlife sightings, the scenery, the incredible knowledge, passion, enthusiasm, and people skills of the expedition leaders.....this trip was spectacular.

Accommodations Review

On board, we were very comfortable in our #213 cabin and felt like there was plenty of room to store our suitcases and "stuff." The food was excellent, lounge and deck comfortable.  We just can't rave enough about how great everything was.

Guides & Crew Review

To name some names, I wonder if you knew any when you went on your trip in may.....our Captain was Captain Marce, Randall Tate led the expedition team of Maria Harvey, Flora Drury, Sarah Lane, Jeremy Saenz and Gabriella. ....  all outstanding people. Equally impressive with their spirits, service, friendliness were the hotel team and other crew members.  Wondering how they find such great people to work for them!

Overall Trip Review

This trip far exceeded our expectations and the guides were fabulous, especially Ellie! The whole thing was spectacular Since we had lots of sun, the crew was extremely busy because everyone went on every possible excursion. Wonderful!!!  We had people on board from 1 year to at least 75, including one 12 year old. Everyone was very compatible and we all booed and hissed when large cruise ships passed by...only rarely!!!

Overall Trip Review

I was a bit concerned shortly before I left for Anchorage and Denali on August 5...that two new "players", InnerSea Discoveries and Knightly Tours, were introduced but AdventureSmith and "my" agent, Chris Harter, continued to coordinate everything beautifully. The number 1 experience was Glacier Bay National Park section of our "un-cruise" on the AdventureExplorer....Why: Because of the variety of activities: hiking, kayaking, wildlife spotting..just one thing after another...and because we had a TERRIFIC Natl. Park Service guide, Andrew, with us...
Number two best experience was Denali National Park: Highlight was the presentation at the Kantishna Roadhouse August 7 and 8 on dogsledding and the Ididarod by Emmett...whose Dad has won the Ididarod four times..It was informative and entertaining..and then he took us out back to meet the sled dogs in training...all rescue animals! The least enjoyable part was the LONG bus ride...over six hours into and out of Denali...but the stay at Kantishna Roadhouse and the wildlife spotting..though often DISTANT..made it worth the trip...  Both segments of the trip were well organized and superb and very relaxing...Imagine being away from cell phones and Internet for days at a time..and not minding at all!! And we were also blessed with remarkably good weather for August...Don't know who is responsible for that (Actually, I do!) but thank you!

Accommodations Review

The cabins at Kantishna were quite comfortable..we needed a coat hanging rack in our Cabin 5..it was missing... The cabin on the AdventureExplorer was fine...good shower pressure and lots of storage space (!) in our Trailblazer cabin

Meals Review

All meals..at both Kantishna Roadhouse in Denali and onboard ship were EXCELLENT...I particularly liked the fact that each night on the ship we were offered a choice of meat, fish, or vegetarian...
2. Re: Kantishna..the breakfast buffet was a bit disorganized at times..not ready as early as it was supposed to be...

Crew & Guides Review

At Kantishna, we had no principal trip leader...took two easy hikes..particularly enjoyed the second one with Darryl..along an old mining road...
Onboard the Adventure Explorer...chief activity honcho was Randall..he was well organized but a seemed a bit distant at times..Very adequately supported by an excellent team: Jeremy, Julie, Hannah, Jen, Debi..sorry if I have left anyone out! They were great!

Chris Harter managed my Denali extension and also the AdvertureExplorer booking...He was immediately responsive to my questions and gave full and helpful answers. Wedded the two trips together seamlessly...we especially appreciated the Goldbelt Hotel in Juneau..very centrally located and nice rooms...
