Polar Regions Antarctica Cruise

Polar Circle Cruise

This 12- to 16-day Polar Circle Cruise travels from Ushuaia to the Shetland Islands and then far south down the Antarctic Peninsula to Detaille Island, crossing the Polar Circle. This border, located at Latitude 66° 33′ South, marks the Antarctic Territory. Sea mammals such as killer whales, humpback whales, minke whales, leopard and crabeater seals are frequently seen during Antarctic Circle voyages.

The 14-day Deep South and 15-day Marguerite Bay itineraries add 2 more days exploring the Peninsula and a possible circumnavigation of Adelaide Island. A special 15-day Elephant Island & Weddell Sea itinerary skips the South Shetland Islands in lieu of unique visits to Elephant Island and various sites in the Weddell Sea. And a unique 16-day Wilkins Ice Shelf itinerary heads straight for the Antarctic Circle, focusing all explorations south of there.

The Antarctic Circle experiences a period of 24 hours of continuous daylight at least once in the year. The reason for this phenomenon is that the axis of the earth is tilted by 23.5 degrees. South of the Polar Circle, at Detaille Island in Crystal Sound, is the farthest south that this excursion will probably reach at Latitude 66°52′ South. The farther south in Antarctica, the colder it gets. Temperatures slightly below 0ºC (32ºF) can be expected on these journeys.

See the sub-ducted crater that is Deception Island, including hot springs and an abandoned whaling station. Look for black-bellied storm petrels nesting in the ruins of the whaling station in Whalers Bay. Take in a large colony of gentoo penguins on Cuverville Island. Enjoy Zodiac cruises through the ice-filled waters of Neko Harbour and Paradise Bay, and possibly Pléneau Island, watching for humpback and minke whales. Hope to sail through the spectacular Lemaire Channel to Petermann Island, before moving on to Detaille Island, which is likely to be the most southern landing.

Choose between the 108-passenger sister ships M/V Plancius and M/V Ortelius, both repurposed research vessels, or purpose-built expedition ship 170-guest Hondius; all four small ships offer guests the comfort and safety of expedition ships designed and built exclusively for polar cruises. Programs may vary depending on local ice and weather conditions, the availability of landing sites and opportunities to see wildlife. The final itinerary will be determined by the expedition leader on board. Flexibility is paramount for expedition cruises like this Polar Circle Cruise.

Day 1
Embark Ushuaia, Argentina

Your voyage begins where the world drops off. Ushuaia, Argentina, reputed to be the southernmost city on the planet, is located on the far southern tip of South America. Starting in the afternoon, you embark from this small resort town on Tierra del Fuego, nicknamed “The End of the World,” and sail the mountain-fringed Beagle Channel for the remainder of the evening.

Drake Passage

Over the next 2 days on the Drake Passage, you enjoy some of the same experiences encountered by the great polar explorers who first charted these regions: cool salt breezes, rolling seas, maybe even a fin whale spouting up sea spray. After passing the Antarctic Convergence–Antarctica’s natural boundary, formed when north-flowing cold waters collide with warmer sub-Antarctic seas–you are in the circum-Antarctic upwelling zone. Not only does the marine life change, the avian life changes too. Wandering albatrosses, grey-headed albatrosses, blackbrowed albatrosses, light-mantled sooty albatrosses, cape pigeons, southern fulmars, Wilson’s storm petrels, blue petrels and Antarctic petrels are a few of the birds you might see.

Days 4 - 9
Antarctic Peninsula

Options for Antarctic Peninsula activities are many, and no less great during the late summer. Humpback whales are prolific in this region, gorging themselves on krill before their migration north. The penguin chicks are also fledging, stirring up activity on the beaches while sleek leopard seals lie in wait, poised to attack the less fortunate ones.

Sites for your Antarctic adventures may include:

Livingston Island
Here you find a wide variety of gentoo and chinstrap penguins on Hannah Point, as well as southern giant petrels and elephant seals hauling out onto the beach.

Deception Island
Actually a subducted crater, this island opens into the sea and creates a natural harbor for the ship. An abandoned whaling station, and multiple bird species–cape petrels, kelp gulls, brown and south polar skuas, and Antarctic terns–can be seen here. Wilson’s storm petrels and black-bellied storm petrels also nest in the ruins of the whaling station in Whalers Bay.

Cuverville Island
A small precipitous island nestled between the mountains of the Antarctic Peninsula and Rongé Island, Cuverville houses a large colony of gentoo penguins and breeding pairs of brown skuas.

Neko Harbor
An epic landscape of mammoth glaciers and endless wind-carved snow, Neko Harbor offers opportunities for a Zodiac cruise and landing that afford the closest views of the surrounding alpine peaks. You might also be able to set foot on the continent here.

Paradise Bay
You could take a Zodiac cruise in these sprawling, ice-flecked waters, where you have a good chance of seeing humpback and minke whales.

Pléneau & Petermann Islands
If the ice allows it, you may sail through the Lemaire Channel in search of Adélie penguins and blue-eyed shags. There’s also a good chance you’ll encounter humpback and minke whales as well as leopard seals.

Crystal Sound
Your journey takes you south along the Argentine Islands to this ice-packed body of water, and from here across the Polar Circle in the morning.

Detaille Island
You may make a landing at an abandoned British research station here, taking in the island’s lofty mountains and imposing glaciers.

Fish Islands
Further north you encounter one of the southernmost Adélie penguin and blue-eyed shag colonies in the Antarctic Peninsula.

Melchior Islands
These islands offer a beautiful landscape rich with icebergs. Leopard seals, crabeater seals and whales are found here, and there are excellent opportunities for kayaking and diving.

Conditions on the Drake Passage determine the exact time of departure.

Day 1
Embark Ushuaia, Argentina

The voyage begins where the world drops off.

Days 2 - 3
Drake Passage

Over the next two days on the Drake Passage, you enjoy some of the same experiences encountered by the great polar explorers who first charted these regions: cool salt breezes, rolling seas, maybe even a fin whale spouting up sea spray. After passing the Antarctic Convergence – Antarctica’s natural boundary, formed when north-flowing cold waters collide with warmer sub-Antarctic seas – you are in the circum-Antarctic upwelling zone. Not only does the marine life change, the avian life changes too. Wandering albatrosses, grey-headed albatrosses, black-browed albatrosses, light-mantled sooty albatrosses, cape pigeons, southern fulmars, Wilson’s storm petrels, blue petrels, and Antarctic petrels are a few of the birds you might see.

Day 4
Pendleton Strait, Renaud Island & Fish Islands

Arrive at the Antarctic Peninsula near the Antarctic Circle in the afternoon. If sea ice allows it, the ship will continue through Pendleton Strait and attempt to offer a passenger landing at the rarely visited southern tip of Renaud Island. Here enjoy the opportunity to see the first Adélie penguins of the trip as well as spectacular views of the icebergs in this surreal, snow-swept environment. In the afternoon, sail to the Fish Islands and encounter one of the southernmost Adélie penguin and blue-eyed shag colonies in the Antarctic Peninsula. Spend the night in the area of Crystal Sound with scenery that will leave you staying up until the small hours, plus a chance to see orca, humpback and minke whales.

Day 5
Detaille Island & The Gullet

Hope to make a landing at an abandoned British research station on Detaille Island, taking in the imposing glaciers scenery. Then sail through The Gullet, one of the most impressive narrow channels in Antarctica, with towering mountains either side, birds following the ship and playful penguins and seals frolicking in the water. If ice conditions allow, carry out a landing or cruise in the afternoon.

Day 6
Porquoi Pas & Horseshoe Islands

Discovered and charted by the famous explorer Charcot, Porquoi Pas offers a pleasant landing on a rocky beach with a backdrop of the Moider Glacier—a gentle walk from the landing site gives an impressive view over it. Antarctic fur seals enjoy relaxing on the small plain behind the beach and add a nice addition to the wildlife encountered on this voyage. After lunch head towards Horseshoe islandso called because of its distinctive shapean abandoned research station provides an insight into the early days of scientific research and original artifacts remain on show to appreciate how different the way of life was in those pioneering days. The hut is set among some of the most beautiful scenery in Antarctica with views over the mountains and snow of Porquoi Pas Island as well as the island’s own mountain range. A photographic landing in many sensestwo old wooden boats remain at the landing site as if waiting for their final launch to work in the icy waters around the islands.

Days 7 - 10
Ice Shelves: George IV & Wilkins

Provided ice and weather conditions allow, head towards Antarctica’s ice shelves (the George IV and Wilkins), to take in the scale of these vast cliffs and expanses of ice that will dwarf the ship and everyone on board. A range of Antarctic wildlife is on display, from humpback whales, fur seals and Adelie penguins, to hopefully one or more Ross seal.

Day 11
Jenny & Leonie Islands

Jenny Island’s raised beaches, hanging glaciers and moss carpets will give another aspect to this Antarctic experience. The island is popular with wildlife too, with terns, skuas, elephant seals, leopard seals and Adelie penguins all as regular visitors. A landing at Leonie Island will take one’s breath away. There is the possibility to undertake a hike to the peak of the island, offering a dramatic panorama of Marguerite Bay and Adelaide Island.

Day 12
Webb & Lagoon Islands

Today visit Webb Island and Lagoon Island. The latter is the most northern island of the Leonie Islands group, also discovered and charted by Jean-Baptiste Charcot. This low-laying island will provide a stark contrast to the previous days with its gently sloped beaches and flat areas to explore. The wildlife here will vary depending on snow cover—if there is little snow, the ground is almost desert-like in appearance.
