The North Pole

From: $24995

The North Pole
The top of the world. For centuries, adventurers and explorers tried to get here by sled, ship, aircraft, dogs and balloons. The harsh realities of the Arctic climate defeated every single one of them until as recently as 1948. Even today, reaching the North Pole is a difficult and challenging journey. Only a select few make it each year. Here is a chance to add your name to the short li st of adventurers who have made the ultimate journey to the top of the world.

Everything seems bigger in the Arctic. Massive icebergs are surrounded by a horizon that seems to go on forever. The vacant blue of the wide sky looks over a sea of ice. Even the silence seems overwhelming. The scale is vast and humbling. You forget things like cell phones and deadlines even exist. It puts life in perspective.

Day 1 - Helsinki, Finland

Your adventure begins with a one-night stay in magical Helsinki, Finland's capital.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
Helsinki Airport Hilton
MEALS:

Day 2 - Embarkation Day in Murmansk

From Helsinki, take our charter flight to Murmansk, Russia, where you'll join 50 Years of Victory, the world's largest and most powerful icebreaker.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
50 Years of Victory
MEALS:
breakfast, lunch and dinner

Days 3 - 6 - Northbound in the Arctic Ocean

Watching Victory crush through the Arctic pack-ice is a sight you’ll never forget, made even more memorable by taking a helicopter flight for a thrilling aerial view of Victory and the expansive Arctic Ocean.

You can expect the days, and hours, to present variable sailing conditions this far north. The crossing from Murmansk to the North Pole can take anywhere from 5 to 8 days. This means you’ll have plenty of time to get to know your shipmates, stare out at the horizon, enjoy some drinks at the bar or go for a swim in the ship’s lap pool.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
50 Years of Victory
MEALS:
breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 7 - The North Pole - 90 Degrees North

All the anticipation of the prior days reaches a climax as you reach the North Pole! Many travelers find themselves overcome with emotion, while others are in a festive and celebratory mood. Take photos, wave a flag, enjoy your moment! Later, everyone enjoys a champagne toast and a BBQ on the ice. Take a Polar Plunge into the icy waters marking the North Pole. Add an exclamation to your success by rising high in a hot air balloon to commemorate this great moment (weather dependent, additional cost).
ACCOMMODATIONS:
50 Years of Victory
MEALS:
breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 8 - Southbound in the Arctic Ocean

Now you can sit back and relax, everything from here on out is a bonus! Expect more great memories as you head farther south; you may get lucky and spot polar bears hunting for seals.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
50 Years of Victory
MEALS:
breakfast, lunch and dinner

Days 9 - 10 - Franz Josef Land & the Arctic Ocean

This group of 191 islands forms the most northerly archipelago in Eurasia, and lies entirely within the Arctic Circle. Here you’ll explore Cape Flora and discover historic remains from three ill-fated Arctic expeditions, and be on the lookout for walrus and polar bears. When conditions permit, Zodiac trips beneath towering cliffs explore remote seabird rookeries. Onboard helicopters again provide aerial sightseeing, and Zodiacs transfer you to seldom visited landing sites. This part of the Arctic Ocean is so remote that Franz Josef Land was discovered after Antarctica. It is the most northerly archipelago in Eurasia and lies entirely within the Arctic Circle.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
50 Years of Victory
MEALS:
breakfast, lunch and dinner

Days 11 - 12 - Southbound at Sea

Enjoy a few moments on deck or reminisce with your shipmates and new friends as you cross the Arctic Ocean back to Murmansk.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
50 Years of Victory
MEALS:
breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 13 - Disembarkation Murmansk to Helsinki

Your port of disembarkation is Murmansk, Russia's most northerly city. After you leave the ship, a transfer is included to the airport, where you'll board your charter flight to Helsinki, Finland, for an overnight stay in the city.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
Hilton Helsinki Strand Hotel
MEALS:
breakfast

Day 14 - Helsinki

After breakfast at your centrally located hotel, you are free to leave for home or extend your stay.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
n/a
MEALS:
breakfast

Itinerary Notes

Read this itinerary as a guide only. As this is an expedition to a remote part of the world, our exact route and program varies according to ice, weather conditions, wildlife, availability of anchorages, political conditions and other factors beyond our control. Flexibility is the key to the success of this expedition. Visits to research stations depend on final permission.

Arrival & Departure

The North Pole cruise begins and ends in Helsinki, Finland. Charter flights to Murmanske depart in the morning on Day 2 and arrive back to Helsinki late on Day 13. Arrival into Helskini may be at anytime on Day 1 and depart from Helsinki at anytime on Day 14. The first group night is at the Helsinki Airport Hilton so there is no need for an arrival transfer; the hotel is located next to the airport terminal, connected by a convenient walkway. Groups stay at the Hilton Helsinki Strand hotel in the city after returning from the North Pole. Taxis are about US$60 and private transfers are US$130 from the hotel to airport.

Activities

Optional hot air ballooning may be available, yet is highly weather dependent. Be one of the few to see the top of the world from a hot air balloon! The 4-person basket is an excellent platform for "aerial" photography. $295 per person (2014-2015), to be paid on board the day of the activity. Interested parties can put their name as priority for this activity.
