Wild & Woolly Alaska Cruise

On this 8-day Alaska small ship cruise, join fellow adventurers on a very active backcountry itinerary. Cruise round-trip from Juneau to experience the best of Glacier Bay cruises and tours, see areas that no other boats visit, and stretch those legs and imagination in all new areas.

Highlights include exploring the “Outback” of Glacier Bay National Park, rarely seen by visitors; hiking and biking through Chichagof Island under exclusive permits to the area; and learning what it’s like to live and work in the wild country of Alaska. Enjoy all-day kayak and bushwhack opportunities, or days packed with other activities such as biking, birding, stand-up paddleboarding, snorkeling, skiff tours or a shoreline campfire. Search for humpback, orca, seals, bears, moose, puffins, porpoise and more. And take in the mighty magic of the LeConte and Baird Glaciers.

The 86-guest Wilderness Legacy shepherds the full complement of adventurers from activity to activity. Her dance floor, saloon, yoga mats and two hot tubs engage travelers between each off-ship activity. And comfortable cabins opening onto the great outdoors offer charming views while cruising.

Day 2
Glacier Bay National Park Outback

Wake up this morning in the Glacier Bay National Park “Outback.” Today, anchor in one of three outback areas of this epic national park. This will include one of the rarely visited areas of either Fern Harbor, Dundas Bay, or No Name Cove near Excursion Inlet. The entire day is set aside for activity, starting with early morning kayak and birding departures into the park. Full activities may include kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, skiff excursions, hiking, snorkeling, beach strolls and more. The likelihood of seeing any vessels or other people is very low. Meals may be aboard the ship or packed as a picnic.

Day 3
Corner Bay & Chichagof Island: Multi-Sport & Local Color

Corner Bay is today’s playground. Chichagof Island is known for its high population of Brown Bears with multiple trails and abandoned Forest Service roads that make for ease of hiking to lakes and rivers. A full range of activities are available with a lean towards hiking and for some, biking. This is the best opportunity for long hikes on trails and old Forest Service roads. This is also home to the Chew family. Learn what it is like to live and work in the wilds of Alaska. Enjoy being guided by the only company permitted to bring guests to this area.

Day 4
South Baranof Island's Primitive & National Wilderness Area

Join an early riser breakfast as the ship enters Patterson Bay. One of the most scenic areas in southeast Alaska, Patterson is a deep narrow bay hemmed in by mountains. All-day kayakers get dropped off and early morning skiff tours also begin the day. Soon after, the ship slowly meanders along the South Baranof Wilderness Area including Deep Cove, Port Walter and Mist Cove, eventually reaching the southern extent of this primitive area. Activities are mostly water-based today, with some hikes and whale watching.

No other small ships visit this area. Weather permitting, this is an ideal area for snorkeling. There’s a good chance to see humpback or orca whales. Alaska fishermen troll this area for prized king salmon. At day’s end, cruise to Gut Bay at the north end of the wilderness area. This is a very dramatic location, so keep cameras at the ready today!

Day 5
Thomas Bay & Baird Glacier

Wake near Cascade Creek in Thomas Bay. This bay is the quintessential playground for guests and crew alike. Options today may include long flat hikes, steep elevation climbs, calm kayaking and hikes to a glacial lake with the mighty Baird Glacier still calving ice into the lake. Depending on tides, start the day near Cascade Creek or at Scenery Cove near Baird Glacier. Regardless, after lunch the boat moves to the opposite end of Thomas Bay for more adventures. Evening skiff tours and kayaks take in the pre-dark hours when the sounds of the wilds beckon.

Day 6
LeConte Glacier National Wilderness Area & Ideal Cove

Today’s activities are timed entirely by the rise and fall of the tide. Visit the LeConte Glacier—the southernmost tidewater glacier in the northern hemisphere— possibly early or possibly late. The shallow current-filled entrance requires an entry near slack water. If the tide is early, possibly hear ice against the hull of the ship while waking up. Today, also visit Ideal Cove and take advantage of trails and, if the timing is right, an evening campfire ashore.

Frederick Sound & Stephens Passage: Whales, Sea Lions & Sea Life

Today it’s all about finding humpbacks, orca, Steller sea lions, porpoise, dolphins, pelagic birds, seals and other marine life. Slowly cruise the whale-rich waters of Frederick Sound and Stephens Passage. This area has the highest seasonal concentration of humpback whales in Alaska and perhaps the entire Northern Hemisphere. This evening enjoy the captain’s dinner and a slideshow of the week’s adventures put together by the crew.
