Wild & Woolly Alaska Cruise

On this 8-day Alaska small ship cruise, join fellow adventurers on a very active backcountry itinerary. Cruise round-trip from Juneau to experience areas that no other boats visit and stretch those legs and imagination in all new areas.

Highlights include exploring the “Outback” of Glacier Bay National Park—rarely seen by visitors—and hiking and biking through Chichagof Island under exclusive permits to the area. Enjoy all-day kayak and bushwhack opportunities, or days packed with other activities such as biking, birding, stand-up paddleboarding, snorkeling, skiff tours or a shoreline campfire. Search for humpback, orca, seals, bears, moose, puffins, porpoise and more. And take in the mighty magic of the LeConte and Baird Glaciers.

Select adult-only and family-friendly departures offer a slightly different itinerary, featuring 3 unique days: in Hobart Bay, the Bay of Pillars, and Pavloff and Hidden Falls. These departures still circumnavigate Admiralty Island and operate round-trip from Juneau. The kid-friendly departures qualify this cruise for our list of Alaska family cruises.

The 86-guest Wilderness Legacy shepherds the full complement of adventurers from activity to activity. Her dance floor, saloon, yoga mats and two hot tubs engage travelers between each off-ship activity. And comfortable cabins opening onto the great outdoors offer charming views while cruising.

Day 3
LeConte Glacier & Ideal Cove

Today’s activities are timed entirely by the rise and fall of the tide. Visit the LeConte Glacier—the southernmost tidewater glacier in the northern hemisphere—possibly early or possibly late. The shallow, current-filled entrance requires an entry near slack water. If the tide is early, possibly hear ice against the hull of the ship while waking up. Today, also visit Ideal Cove and take advantage of trails and, if the timing is right, an evening campfire ashore.

Depending on tides, start the day near Cascade Creek or at Scenery Cove near Baird Glacier. Regardless, after lunch the boat moves to the opposite end of Thomas Bay for more adventures. Evening skiff tours and kayaks take in the pre-dark hours when the sounds of the wilds beckon.

Day 5
Patterson & Gut Bay Wilderness

Join an early-riser breakfast as the ship enters Patterson Bay. One of the most scenic areas in Southeast Alaska, Patterson is a deep narrow bay hemmed in by mountains. All-day kayakers get dropped off and early morning skiff tours also begin the day. Soon after, the ship slowly meanders along the South Baranof Wilderness Area including Deep Cove, Port Walter and Misty Cove, eventually reaching the southern extent of this primitive area. Activities are mostly water-based today, with some hikes and whale watching.

No other small ships visit this area. Weather permitting, this is an ideal area for snorkeling. There’s a good chance to see humpback or orca whales. Alaska fishermen troll this area for prized king salmon. At day’s end, cruise to Gut Bay at the north end of the wilderness area. This is a very dramatic location, so keep cameras at the ready today!

"This Trip is Beyond Words!"

This trip is beyond words!...My 21 year old and my 18 year old had the time of their lives and didn't even care that they didn't have phone or wifi access the whole week...We have all thought about a large cruise ship - but no longer!

Alaska is a bucket list destination and we wanted to be able to do active things to experience it- hike, kayak, etc. Everything was well organized.

Extend Your Trip

Additional Travel Options Before or After Your Cruise

Choose from a variety of other AdventureSmith Alaska trips to extend your journey, or opt for a pre-cruise extension with your fellow passengers on this cruise.

The Denali & Talkeetna Wilderness Rail Adventure is a pre-cruise escorted land tour featuring wilderness lodge stays in Denali National Park and Talkeetna Mountains, and hotel overnights in Anchorage. This tour takes you through the Talkeetna Mountain and Denali National park by rail, visits the Alaska Native Heritage Center, and provides opportunities for wildlife viewing, hiking, kayaking, and river rafting or flightseeing (added cost). This land package aligns with Friday cruise departures, so all Wild & Woolly Alaska Cruises require additional hotel night(s).
