Polar Regions Antarctica Cruise

Antarctic Peninsula Including South Shetland Islands

This 11-day Antarctic Peninsula Including South Shetland Islands cruise is designed to optimize time in Antarctica, to experience the best of everything. Time at sea provides ample opportunities for bird-watching while searching for wandering, grey-headed, black-browed and light-mantled albatrosses; southern fulmars; and Wilson’s, cape, blue and Antarctic petrels. Visit worthwhile sites like Cuverville Island, Danco Island in the Errera Channel, Neko Harbour and Paradise Bay. Enjoy the opportunity to set foot on the Antarctic Continent.

In the South Shetland volcanic archipelago, brave new worlds like Deception Island, Neptune’s Bellows and possibly Half Moon Island. Opportunities exist to see the flooded caldera’s hot springs and visit an abandoned whaling station or active Argentine scientific research station. Zodiac cruises and kayaking expose the icy beauty of polar seas. When conditions allow, snowshoe on shore to experience quiet moments of solace in a place few humans go.

The main Antarctic Peninsula Including South Shetland Islands itinerary cruises over 11 days and there is also a longer 12-day route that spends one extra day (days 4-8) on the Antarctic Peninsula. In addition, a special 13-day itinerary spends dedicated time visiting Half Moon Island and the Antarctic Sound, and cruises the northern section of the Antarctic Peninsula. Four small research vessels operate the itinerary: 116-passenger M/V Plancius, 116-guest M/V Ortelius and 170-guest sister ships M/V Hondius and M/V Janssonius. On Hondius departures, experience Antarctica in a hands-on way, with opportunities to participate in citizen science and learn from photography workshops. Optional activities include camping and kayaking (additional cost) with advanced reservations required as space is limited. Enjoy included activities such as hiking, snowshoeing and Zodiac rides, and become one of the fortunate few to have set foot on the White Continent!

Antarctic Peninsula: Antarctic Sound

Glaciers, icebergs, and pack ice extend into the horizon. On the northern side of the Antarctic Sound is Dundee Island, where there’s the chance to land at Petrel Cove. The Argentinean Base Petrel is located here, and its massive airplane hangar hints at the base’s heritage: It was from this stretch of flat land that Lincoln Elsworth and Herbert Hollick-Kenyon completed the first flight across the Antarctic Continent in 1935.
