The Great Austral Loop

On this luxury Antarctica voyage between South America and the Antarctic Peninsula, discover the most beautiful sites of these southern lands. Set sail from the fascinating city of Ushuaia, which the Argentinians call El fin del mundo (the end of the world). First, chart a course for the Falkland Islands, whose wild beauty and lush moors are sure to captivate. Next, head to South Georgia with its impressive glaciers and black-sand beaches where large colonies of king penguins have taken up residence.

Then sail to the White Continent, realm of the unexpected. Weather and ice conditions permitting, this extreme environment where nature reigns supreme will reveal its most beautiful secrets through numerous discoveries. Gentoo, Adelie and chinstrap penguins, humpback whales, seals and seabirds are some of the encounters you may experience in the Antarctic Peninsula, creating indelible memories. Each day, whether on land, aboard the ship or during a Zodiac outing, be surrounded by a grandiose decor ranging from icebergs to ice floe and ancient glaciers.

Most departures sail round-trip from Ushuaia, Argentina and begin and end with a charter flight between Ushuaia and Buenos Aires, Argentina. The Expedition to Southern Lands itinerary skips the Falkland Islands in lieu of adding time to explore the Antarctic Peninsula. The Journey to Austral Lands and Valdes Peninsula itineraries either start or end with a charter flight for embarkation or disembarkation in Ushuaia; these departures uniquely sail along the Argentinian coastline, adding a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Valdes Peninsula.

A selection of sister ships cruise the waters of the sub-Antarctic and the Antarctic continent on this once-in-a-lifetime expedition, with options including L’Austral, Le Boreal and Le Lyrial. Travel in the comfort of a 5-star hotel aboard these luxury French expedition ships that offer refined and attentive service, a plethora of onboard activities and unrivaled elegance. Appreciate understated sophistication, an international feel and top-notch guides aboard this ship with up to 200 guests aboard their luxury Antarctica cruises.

Day 4
New Island & Grave Cove

New Island, with its distinctive jagged relief, is located on the western edge of the Falkland Islands and is home to a tiny village of two families. Step onto the golden sand of its flower-lined beaches, beside which an old stone house still stands, and enter a natural paradise. A narrow pathway weaves around typical Falkland moorlands; follow it to the heart of a colony of southern rockhopper penguins, black-browed albatross and imperial shags. It’s the perfect opportunity to watch the albatross swoop down from the cliffs and skim the waves that crash against the rocks on the exposed side of the island.

The ship then makes her way through the turbulent Woolly Gut strait and emerges in the stillness of Grave Cove. Located in the northern edge of the Falkland Islands, this bay owes its name to the vestiges of whalers’ graves that overlook the beach. Step off the boat and onto the white-sand beach and possibly be escorted by a few hospitable Commerson’s dolphins, elegantly adorned in black and white. A stroll along the grassy dunes leads to a vast plain of lush green grass, tended by a few sheep. On the other side of the island, find one of the largest gentoo penguin colonies in the area. With some luck, also glimpse a sea lion scouring the waves for his next meal.

South Orkney Islands

More than 85% glaciated, these remote mountainous islands are hidden in the Southern Ocean, some 373 miles (600 km) from the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula. The archipelago is composed of four main islands: Coronation Island, Signy Island, Powell Island and Laurie Island. Discovered in 1821 by seal hunters, they were also explored in 1823 by the British navigator James Weddell, who gave them their current name. Despite the ravages caused by whale and seal hunting, today a sizeable leopard seal population can be found there, along with chinstrap penguins and snow petrels. Laurie Island is home to an old scientific station that is still in operation.

Port Stanley, Falklands

Situated at the far eastern end of the Falklands’ largest island, Port Stanley is the capital of this remote archipelago in the South Atlantic, composed of nearly 700 islands and islets. In 1764, Louis Antoine de Bougainville settled the first pioneers here and the port grew rapidly. Placed under the Spanish crown in 1767, then under British sovereignty since 1833, the town has retained some South American features fused with the Victorian style that punctuate the city, and the houses with their colorful roofs brighten the moorland landscapes with their windy and harsh climate reminiscent of the Scottish islands of Orkneys or Shetland. In front of the Cathedral, built in 1933, an arch made of whale jaw bones reminds us that Port Stanley was once a whaling port.

Embark Buenos Aires, Argentina

A port city built on the southwestern shore of the Rio de la Plata, between the Atlantic Ocean and the vast Argentine Pampas, Buenos Aires is a unique city in Latin America. Nicknamed “the Little Paris of South America,” the Argentine capital is a clever blend of architecture with European influences and a joyful Latin American atmosphere. Designed on an orthogonal grid plan, it has 48 districts, all of which are as charming as they are different, with a range of styles such as Belle Époque, gothic and baroque. With its markets overflowing with treasures, its legendary cultural and architectural heritage, and tango providing its background music, the Argentine capital will delight you on every street corner.

Day 4
Puerto Madryn, Argentina

On the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, in the Argentinian province of Chubut, stands the city of Puerto Madryn nestling in the Golfo Nuevo and surrounded by wild and abundant nature. You will be able to follow the narrow strip of land formed by the isthmus for a few kilometers, to reach the Valdes Peninsula nature reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its microclimate, protected from the extreme conditions of the Southern Atlantic, makes this an ideal breeding ground for southern right whales in winter, but also for southern elephant seals, southern sea lions and orcas. You may get the chance to spot numerous birds, Magellanic penguins, guanacos and Patagonian maras living in this desert steppe.

Day 7
Port Stanley, Falklands

Days 15 - 16
Antarctic Peninsula

Succumb to the magic of a place unlike any other. To this day, the mythical Antarctic Peninsula still holds real fascination and promises its visitors unforgettable moments. Throughout your adventure in this icy realm, you will find yourself in the heart of a spectacular decor in subtle shades of blue and white, surrounded by exceptional wildlife. Penguins, humpback whales, seals and giant petrels are at home here, as are elephant seals, fur seals, Antarctic minke whales and orcas. Depending on which sites you will be lucky enough to visit, you may get the chance to observe them and share with them the beauty of these extreme parts.

Each day, based on ice conditions, the captain and the expedition leader will suggest Zodiac outings or landings to discover the infinite riches of the Antarctic Peninsula. Glaciers, ice floe, tabletop icebergs, mountain peaks that plunge straight into the sea, volcanic beaches, research stations, enchanting bays and vestiges of the whaling industry: these are the faces of the Antarctic that will likely reveal themselves to you, in a hushed and surreal atmosphere. You will sail in the wake of Jean-Baptiste Charcot, Adrien de Gerlache and Sir Ernest Shackleton, great Antarctic explorers who, from the 19th century, set out to conquer these remote and uninhabited lands.
