Falkland Islands Air Cruise

Sail one way and fly the other on this magical 8-day Falkland Islands Air Cruise to the remote islands of the South Atlantic. With peaceful bays and teeming wildlife, the Falklands greet you with awe-inspiring beauty. With the advantage of flying one way, there’s more time to photograph teeming wildlife, explore the drastic landscapes and learn about the fascinating human history of these islands.

Highlights include the chance to visit Cape Horn, the remote tip of South America that is such a rare yet rewarding destination for the adventurous traveler; viewing wildlife that’s thriving in the austral spring, summer and fall, including penguins, whales, seals and seabirds, all of whom congregate in the Southern Ocean to feed and reproduce; and adventures via Zodiac boats that follow in the footsteps of legendary explorers like Sir Earnest Shackleton.

On West Falklands, all five breeding species of penguins can be seen along with black-browed albatross. Dramatic cliffs contrast with sheltered bays and natural harbors, which host a large concentration and great diversity of wildlife. Down the Falkland Sound, immerse in the past and recent human history of the islands with visits to battlefield sites and local settlements. At Port Stanley, meet the people who call this wintery paradise home.

In addition to the main 8-day Falkland Islands Air Cruise, there is a reverse 8-day itinerary, as well as a longer 15-day itinerary that adds a visit to South Georgia, flies both to and from Port Stanley, and spends more time exploring the hidden coves and beautiful bays of the Falklands and South Georgia Islands. On South Georgia Island, be amazed by sharp snowy peaks that jut out of the sea and large wildlife colonies.

Arrival & Departure

The main 8-Day Falkland Islands Air Cruise begins in Ushuaia, Argentina (USH), and ends with an air flight to Punta Arenas, Chile (PUQ). We highly recommend arriving one day prior to your trip start date in case of any flight delay, cancellation or lost luggage issues. Plan flights to arrive to Ushuaia no later than 2:00pm on day 1 of the itinerary for a strict boarding time of 7:00pm to 8:00pm. At 8:00pm, boarding will close. The same deadline applies to travelers arriving directly at the hotel on day 1. Travelers who miss their arrival deadline will be considered “no-show.” They will not be able to participate in the expedition and will receive no refund. On the last day of the expedition, disembarkation in Port Stanley is planned in conjunction with the departing commercial flight to Punta Arenas. A transfer is provided to the airport in Port Stanley for the flight. Plan to depart Punta Arenas anytime on the final day of your trip; however, please avoid scheduling tight flight connections on either side of your trip and consider the possibility of delays that could be caused by weather or operational complications. AdventureSmith strongly suggests a flexible air ticket be held for your journey home in case you need to change your travel arrangement following a delay of the return flight from Antarctica. If you would like assistance with international flights, please visit our Booking Flights resource page.

The maximum weight allowed on the flights to or from Port Stanley is 23 kg (50 lb.) per checked bag, plus one piece of hand luggage weighing not more than 8 kg (17 lb.). Additional charges may be incurred for checked luggage, depending on the ticket purchased. Unfortunately, it is not possible to purchase extra allowance. Note that at certain points during the expedition you will be required to handle your own luggage.

Itinerary Notes

Read this itinerary as a guide only; the exact route and program varies according to ice, weather conditions and the wildlife encountered and the captain’s discretion. Flights to and from Antarctica operate based on weather conditions. While historically only a minority of flights have experienced a delay, be prepared for that possibility. Flexibility is the key to the success of any Antarctica expedition. Visits to research stations depend on final permission.
