Ecuador Amazon Adventure – Napo Wildlife Center

Discover Ecuador’s Amazon from Napo Wildlife Center, a luxury eco-hotel and ecotourism project that includes the conservation of over 82 square miles of the most pristine Amazon rainforest within Yasunì National Park, which is an important UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and the largest tract of tropical rainforest in Ecuador. Since 2003 the lodge has been recognized by both guests and the media for its impeccable operation, service and experiences provided to all visitors.

Napo’s authentic thatch-roofed huts overlook a remote lake. A 120-foot-high observation tower provides a 360-degree view of the surrounding wilderness. Excursions start early each day and include visits to: the thriving parrot clay licks, where a total of 11 species of parrots, parakeets and macaws can be seen; the Kichwa community of Añangu to share time with a local family; and a 118-foot canopy tower on the Napo River, where flocks of colorful tanagers pass right through the canopy of the trees and spider monkeys search for fruit in nearby trees.

An Amazon lodge trip is the perfect extension to a Galapagos cruise, or our Amazon travel experts can craft a custom Amazon tour. Choose from a 4- or 5-day journey, or extend your stay with a custom adventure up to 8 days. For a cultural-focused itinerary inquire about the 5-day Cultural Tour, to learn the customs and traditions of the Kichwa Añangu community. Day 3
Napo River Canopy Tower & Rainforest Hiking

After an early breakfast, depart from the lodge to a 118-foot canopy tower on the Napo River, a great way to experience life above the forest floor. This is the second tower at the Napo Wildlife Center (the first is attached to the dining hall with great views of the lake) that reveals a whole new world. The tower is located deep within the terra firme forest, about 30 minutes from the lodge. Ascend 12 floors, passing through different levels of the forest before emerging on top of a huge Ceiba tree. Cross a built-in wooden platform and experience the view formerly reserved only for the birds. The metal tower itself was constructed to the highest standards, galvanized and carefully inspected by engineers. The top platform was constructed by tree platform specialists with safety as the priority.

From top to bottom, there is no finer canopy experience in eastern Ecuador. Flocks of colorful tanagers pass through, blue and yellow macaws fly by, in nearby trees spider monkeys search for fruit, two species of large toucans call in the early mornings and afternoons, and the life of the forest canopy opens before you. Birds that are virtually impossible to see from the forest floor far below are suddenly right beside you. Lunch is served at the lodge and later in the afternoon, hike a terra firme trail along primary forest to discover the forest interior. Here there are possibilities of finding lizards, colorful manakins or the unique and endemic golden mantle tamarin monkeys. After the hike, explore the lake and creeks by dugout canoe with possibility of meeting a giant otter family on the way.

Day 1
Quito to Coca & Napo Wildlife Center

This morning take a short flight from Quito to the town of Coca, lasting about half an hour. A short drive from the airport to “La Mision,” the main port of Coca, will bring you to the gateway to the Amazon, where Francisco de Orellana set sail in 1541.

Here, take a short break and make use of the facilities before transferring to smaller canoes that are used instead of motorized vehicles to maintain the pristine landscape and habitats. Over the next couple of hours, be paddled up Añangu Creek to the NWC lodge, which is situated on the bank of a tranquil lake amid a vast tract of primary rainforest where hunting is prohibited. On this canoe ride, you have high chances of spotting wildlife! Various species of monkeys, as well as large birds like toucans, parrots, and even macaws, can be seen. Days 2 - 4
Birding From Napo Wildlife Center

Enjoy 3 full days (or more) to scratch the surface of the avifauna in western Amazonia and get a feel for the complexity of rich habitats and microhabitats within easy reach of the lodge. Spend one or two mornings visiting the very sturdy canopy tower, which offers privileged access to a world apart from the rest of the rainforest. Flocks of oropendolas, aracaris, tanagers and euphonias roam the canopy in search of fruit; spangled and plum-throated cotingas glow from the treetops; raptors perch on vantage points to dry off in the morning sun; white-browed purpletufts and crowned slaty flycatchers sally for insects; numerous parrots and macaws fly by or drop in if there is a fruiting tree nearby; and many other species wander past (and through!) the tower tree.

Good forest trails offer access to another component of the avifauna, with woodcreepers, antbirds, and tinamous particularly well represented. Hope to encounter the vocally striking screaming piha and the visually striking blacknecked red cotinga. A number of clay licks offer the spectacle of hundreds of parrots and parakeets coming in to eat clay. Also enjoy numerous canoe rides around the lake by the lodge and along adjacent creeks, where the songs of silvered and plumbeous antbirds reverberate through the flooded forest.

Watch for the zigzag heron, point-tailed palmcreeper, orange-crested manakin and the striking long-billed woodcreeper, plus several species of monkeys and the impressive giant river otter. Visit the local community at the river-edge forest, home to numerous other species such as turquoise and magpie tanagers, rufous-headed woodpecker, and swallow-winged puffbird. Explore the Napo River’s islands for distinct avifauna including the black-and-white antbird, olivespotted hummingbird, at least three species of spinetails, capped heron, collared plover and yellow-billed tern.
