Day 4
Mountain Potters Trip & Mexican Cooking Class

Experience the traditional way of life of the mountain ranchers in Baja and meet local potters in a true oasis. Learn how Baja Californians have carved their homes and livings out of the mountains for centuries. See the simple but impressive architecture of the area and, of course, view the work and art of the potters. Getting there is half the adventure too. Drive through the huge, dry arroyos and the beautiful desert roads that lead up into the mountains and pass through forests of cactus and desert life along the way.

Spend the day with Doña Ramona and her family on their working ranch. While the family puts together an incredibly delicious lunch, take a pottery class from Ramona herself, imparting not only her tricks for working with the local clay, but also stories from her life in the mountains. Once you’ve created your own Baja pottery masterpiece, Doña Ramona then takes the group into the kitchen to teach each person how to make tortillas in the traditional style – a skill to take home with you. Lunch is typically several wonderful dishes, each made with fresh ranch ingredients.

Lunch is followed by a tour of the ranch, viewing Ramona’s traditional kiln and the little chapel that she has on her property for the visiting priest that comes to the village twice a month. Time and interest permitting, wrap up the trip with visits to some of Doña Ramona’s potter neighbors before heading back to Todos Santos.

This evening chef Iker Algorri, author of “Cooking Adventures in Baja California Sur” and chef-in-residence at Los Colibris Casitas, will share some of his secrets in this wonderful Mexican Survival Cooking Class. Learn to make the perfect margarita, and gain the skill to make some truly memorable Mexican dishes following Chef Iker’s cooking philosophy, the Magnificence of Simplicity, in this fun, light class filled with great Latin music. But be warned – dancing often known to follow!

Day 5
Baja Bird Watching, Horseback Riding, Art Show & Hotel California

Start early this morning with a few hours of bird watching in the vicinity of Los Colibris Casitas (colibris means hummingbird). Over 430 bird species have been spotted in Baja California Sur, including 6 endemic species, and 150 species have been seen in the area around Los Colibris. After birding, enjoy a terrific Mexican breakfast, then it’s off to the horses! Baja California Sur is built on ranchero culture, and horseback riding around Todos Santos is a great way to get a taste of that traditional life and to explore the area’s beautiful ecosystems and wildlife habitats. Our guide, Kaia is not only an accomplished rider, but an avid birder and naturalist who delights in sharing her local knowledge.

Have lunch at a lovely local spot in town, then have a free afternoon to explore the shops and art galleries of Todos Santos. In the late afternoon enjoy a wine reception at the gallery of local artist Jill Logan, who has been living in and drawing her inspiration from Todos Santos for 25 years. We’ll cap off this wonderful day with dinner at the famed Hotel California, just across the street from Jill’s gallery.

Day 6
Pacific Bluffs Cliff Walk

End your wonderful adventure in Baja with hiking through glorious scenery, fascinating local history and encounters with strange and wonderful flora and fauna. Start with a walk at Punta Lobos, the sweeping Pacific beach where the local fishermen of Todos Santos launch their boats each morning and bring in the daily catch each afternoon. Hike up the hill to a breathtaking view of a different kind of coastline – dramatic rocky outcroppings and crashing surf – and look for whales from this high vantage point. Pass an active sea lion colony, as well as the ruins of the shipping port Los Algodones. Your guide will offer in-depth commentary on the terrific variety of flora and fauna, as well as the history of the area from the human perspective. After your 3.5 mile hike, arrive at the idyllic beach of San Pedro where a picnic lunch will be waiting. San Pedro features a beautiful marsh filled with birdlife and a protective cove ringed by towering palms. Here eat, relax, sunbathe, swim and read. Note that this hike includes a 600-foot elevation gain at the beginning, hiking over loose, uneven terrain, and some bouldering.

This evening, celebrate all the adventures you have had and friends you have made with a farewell dinner at La Copa, a lovely restaurant in the garden of a restored sugar barron’s home.
